The Sophian Centennial continues. Last Sunday we invited historian Michael Kathrens (Kansas City Houses 1885-1938) to share stories of notable Sophian residents who kept Kansas Citians fashionable. Herb Woolf (Woolf Brothers haberdashery); Sieg and Florence Harzfeld (Hartzfelds department store), and Maude Springe (Swanson couture). Of course, wine and delicious food accompanied the day, thanks to Twisted Times KC and Green Dirt Farm. We capped it off, by hanging our centennial banner on our front colonnade (thanks to KC Banner).
Jump Jive Swing set the mood perfectly with tunes from the roaring twenties on, to match the arc of an iconic building in Kansas City. Wonderful musicians—Aaron Bush on guitar; Mark Hamblin on upright bass; Scott Reed on clarinet/saxophone—kept us all smiling and dancing. JumpJiveKC@gmail.com
Last Saturday we kicked off the centennial year for the Sophian—with a sparkling toast, fantastic cake, and a jazz ensemble. The setting: our dramatic lobby of black and white marble, warmed by a fire.
The Sophian is officially 100 years old! The Kansas City Star celebrated the Sophian opening Feb 25, 1923, built by Harry Sophian, who brought a new standard in deluxe apartment buildings to Kansas City.

Phase 1 dissembling the entablature: Each element is cut away and catalogued.

Every element of the entablature (the horizontal bands on top the columns) was deconstructed; sent to Chicago for molds to be made and new stonework cast. Here is the restored colonnade.

The Sophian completed restoration of our hundred year old entrance colonnade. This is the 1922 architect’s rendering.
